What you need to know?

According to the decision of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, pets in Poland must have a passport.

Within 48 hours after crossing the border in the absence of an animal passport, the owner must visit a veterinary hospital for registration. The cost of a passport is PLN 100. In this case, if the animal does not have a chip and a certificate of rabies vaccination, the cost of services increases to approx. 300 zl (chipping only - up to 150 zl).

For lack of "legalization" of the animal there is a fine.

In Poland it is forbidden:

  • Sale and placement of dogs and cats in markets, fairs and exchanges. You can buy an animal only in a legal kennel, animal shelter or in a social organization whose purpose is to protect animals.

  • Breeding dogs and cats for commercial purposes. Exception: an organization (kennel) registered in the relevant state register, the charter of which specifies the activities related to the breeding of purebred dogs and cats. Breeding dogs that are on the list of aggressive breeds is allowed only by decision of the head of local government.

  • Stay of dogs on a walk and without the possibility of identification of the owner, except for private fenced areas.

  • Euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters and farm animals without a veterinarian.

Animal cruelty or killing in Poland is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Chipping

In Poland, there is no mandatory registration and chipping of dogs and cats. But pet owners are encouraged to register, explaining that it's easy to find a lost pet.

The Safe-Animal registry is part of the European animal database EuroPetNet, so all information about dogs and cats entered there automatically appears in the pan-European registry.

If the city cooperates with Safe-Animal, registration of the animal in the database is free. Additionally, only the creation of a profile is paid - 50 zl.
